How 21K Gold Wears Over a Lifetime
At 87.5% pure, 21K gold is soft enough to take filigree and strong enough to survive a lifetime of feast days. What that actually means for the pieces you own.

The first years
High-karat gold is honest metal. It does not flake, pit or turn — there is too little in it that can. What it does is mark: a soft hairline here, a gentle rounding of an edge there. In the first years of a piece this can alarm people raised on plated jewelry, where any mark means the surface is failing. On 21K it means the opposite. The surface is the metal, all the way through.
A pendant worn daily for five years will not look worse than the day it arrived. It will look inhabited — the high points burnished by skin and cloth, the recesses keeping their matte depth. Goldsmiths call this the piece taking its polish, and many families prefer it to new.
The hand-me-down years
This is the life 21K gold is actually designed for. A bangle is lent to a cousin for her engagement and returned. A chain is shortened for a daughter, then let out again for hers. Before a wedding, pieces go back to a goldsmith for an hour with the burnisher and come out looking like the day they were made — because underneath the soft marks, nothing has been lost. The gold is still all there.
That is the quiet arithmetic of high-karat jewelry: it is the only thing most families own that can be worn hard for fifty years and still be worth its weight at the end. The adornment and the reserve are the same object.
Gold does not age. It gathers.
Caring for it
The rules are simple because the metal is simple. Put gold on last and take it off first — perfume, lotion and chlorine dull a finish faster than years of wear. Wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them separately in the pouch provided so filigree never catches on filigree.
For a deeper clean, warm water with a drop of mild soap and a thorough dry is all that is needed. And if a piece ever needs more — a re-burnish, a repair, a resizing — that is what we are for. Gold this pure is never finished; it is only ever between wearers.
